Safety and reliability are synonymous for Swiss products in the areas of traffic management and signalling. Switzerland is a pioneering country in the testing, introduction and operation of the modern European Train Control System (ETCS). Since March 2007, the SBB is the first railway in Europe to successfully use an ETCS Level 2 system in full scheduled operation with train headways of two minutes on the 45 kilometre long section Mattstetten – Rothrist between Bern and Zurich. The Swiss sections of the TransEuropeanNet corridor Antwerp – Genoa will be equipped with ETCS Level 2 from 2015.
